What is a D.W.I?
D.W.I. stands for "Driving While Intoxicated." It may be a misdemeanor, or a felony, depending on the individual's prior history of DWI convictions. D.W.A.I. stands for "Driving With Abilities Impaired" and is generally a Violation.
One may stand accused of DWI if the police believe they have determined that a person has been operating a vehicle with more than .08% of one gram of alcohol per liter in a person's bloodstream. Or, one may stand accused of DWI if the police believe they have determined that a person was operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The penalties include suspension/revocation of driving privileges, fines, and the possibility of incarceration. The possibility of the suspension of one's license beins at "arraignment." The laws surrounding DWI and DWAI are complex, and becoming more complex every year.
